Excellence in Sports: Ohenewa Akuffo

Ohenewa Akuffo -- SportsAn internationally accomplished athlete and Canadian Olympian in the sport of wrestling, Ohenewa Akuffo was born in North York, Ontario to Ghanaian parents.

She had the opportunity to spend five years of her early childhood in Ghana when her parents relocated. Her family returned to Canada when she was eight years old and settled in Brampton, Ontario.

Akuffo’s journey to the sport of wrestling started while in her first year of high school at Ascension Secondary School in Mississauga, Ontario. She later went on to wrestle for St. Augustine Secondary School in Brampton.

With training at the Matman Wrestling Club, she quickly blossomed in the sport. By age 17, she made her first Senior National Wrestling Team and represented Canada in the World Championships.

This was the start of Akuffo’s success as a high-performance athlete. She went on to represent Canada in numerous competitions internationally and win many feats. Her notable achievements include: Commonwealth Games Gold medalist; World Silver & Bronze medalist; Canadian Olympian; Brampton Hall of Fame Inductee; Two-time Pan American Games Silver medalist; Ten-time Senior National Champion; Presenter at the 2013 International Olympic Academy Young Participants’ Session.

The energetic athlete received her Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons) Marketing degree with a Certificate in Management and Sports Administration from York University.

Her experience as an Olympian and world wrestling medalist has culminated in her becoming a sought-after professional speaker. An entrepreneur, Akuffo is the founder of Bodily Prosperity, a company she established on principles she derived from her high-performance lifestyle as a world-class athlete.

Bodily Prosperity is a multi-service company, focused on helping clients achieve better health, better life, and better body image.

As a community advocate with a passion for inspiring youth and young adults to achieve greatness, Akuffo spends a lot of her time speaking at schools and community organizations.

She works with the Canadian Olympic Committee, the Pan American Games, Plan Canada, Heart & Stroke Foundation and Right To Play, on speaking series, and has also partnered with RBC and Bell Canada to speak at corporate events.  With her ready smile, Akuffo is always looking to speak and inspire people of all ages.
